Who is chosen depends a lot on what college prospects do on the field – how fast they run the 40, how sharp they look catching passes or attacking the quarterback – but importance will also be placed on their cognitive skills.
The Wonderlic IQ test is not the end-all, be-all for a hopeful player, but for certain positions, like the quarterback, it reveals a good amount about how quickly they can process information and answer it correctly. It's an important part of the interview process. Wouldn't you like to know if your franchise player can compute questions at a high level?
According to the NFL Combine:
"[It] measures a person's ability to think, learn, solve problems and follow instructions – all critical traits a football player needs to have, particularly one coming into the NFL, where gameplay is much faster and decisions must be made in the blink of an eye. The Wonderlic test does not measure whether or not a potential player can read, spell, or do math; it doesn't look at their motivation and their personality on or off field. There are other test for measuring these traits".
