The NFL Combine starts today, but last weekend kids in the Northern Virginia area got a jumpstart on the workouts.

The Washington Redskins Kids Club, in conjunction with Orthopaedic Virginia, hosted a Mini Combine on Saturday with help from wide receiver Jerry Rice Jr. and defensive lineman Robert Thomas.

"Play 60 is a good organization, where 60 minutes per day, it's great exercise for the kids," said Rice Jr. "We're just having fun with these kids on this Saturday and I wanted to help out. Coming out here and showing [and] having fun is definitely an aspect kids need to see."

The kids participated in the same drills as some NFL prospects will in the next few days, running the 40-yard dash and participating in the long jump as well as some more kid-friendly exercises.

Thomas, when asked about why he was there to help, put it simply.

"Anytime I can help kids," he said, "I'm there."
