From the very first moment he put on a No. 89 Redskins jersey, rookie tight end Devin Mahina knew he'd get asked about it.

"Do you know who wore that before you?"

"Did you watch Santana Moss growing up?"

"Can you produce the same way the past No. 89 did?"

While Mahina is just trying to carve out his own path to success to the NFL, he also understands the history behind his jersey number.

"I heard Santana Moss was a really great receiver, came out of Miami back in the early 2000's," he told the media on Wednesday. "So, it is an honor to wear his number. But you know, me personally, I can't live up to those expectations. I just have to go out there and do my thing."

Moss, of course, spent 10 seasons with the Redskins and is considered one of the best wide receivers to wear the burgundy and gold.

Along with Pro Football Hall of Famers Charley Taylor, Bobby Mitchell and Art Monk at the top of the team's receiving record books is Moss.

That's why seeing so many No. 89 jerseys in the stands at FedExField is understandable to Mahina.

"You know, it's all good," he said. "I'm not really paying too much attention to that I have other things to worry about, like what I got to do on the field, especially being a rookie. It is a great honor to wear his number."

A college free agent out of BYU, Mahina, like the rest of the rookies, has been showcasing his talents against the veterans in OTAs.

A "great opportunity," Mahina's driven by the fact he has a lot to prove.

As a rookie, as a free agent, I'm starting from the bottom of the totem pole," he said. "I've got to do anything I can to show the coaches I belong."
