The Washington Redskins will continue their 2018 preseason schedule on Friday, Aug. 24, when the team hosts the Denver Broncos at FedExField. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The game will be the first meeting in preseason play between Washington and Denver since 2004 when the Redskins defeated the Broncos, 20-17, in Canton, Ohio, in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. The Redskins are coming off their first win of the preseason last Thursday in a 15-13 win against the New York Jets at FedExField.

Kicker Dustin Hopkins spotlighted the Redskins after he connected on all five of his field-goal attempts, including the game winner as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Alex Smith made his Redskins debut and led the team on a scoring drive in his only offensive series of the game. He completed 4-of-6 pass attempts for 48 yards.

"I just think how versatile we are. I don't think there is anything we can't do or won't do," said Smith. "We've got coaches that are creative, great teachers putting us in great situations. I think we've got a bunch of guys that are really talented and that can handle the volume."

THE OPPONENT

The Denver Broncos entered the 2018 preseason following a 5-11 regular season record in 2017.

Head Coach Vance Joseph returns for his second season as the head coach folowing a transitional year for the Broncos in which the team featured a trio of new coordinators, three different starting quarterbacks and 66 different players that suited up.

After splitting 2017 with quarterbacks Trevor Siemean and Brock Osweiler, the Broncos have signed sixyear veteran Case Keenum to compete for the starting quarterback position.

Keenum spent last season with the Minnesota Vikings, completing 325-of-481 passes (67.6 percent) for 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Paxton Lynch is the only returning quarterback on the Broncos roster and the 2016 first-round pick is looking to rise to his draft status. Lynch has played in five games over his two year NFL career, completing 79-of-128 passes (61.7 percent) for 792 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

 After the departure of leading rusher CJ Anderson, Devontae Booker leads the returning running back corps for the Broncos. Booker recorded 850 all-purpose yards last season, while also serving as a kick returner. Royce Freeman (2018 third-round pick) will share the backfield with Booker after an electric career at the University of Oregon.

Veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders return to lead a talented wide receiver group. Thomas hasn't missed a game since 2011 and recorded 949 receiving yards on 83 catches and scored four touchdowns in 2017. Last season, Sanders added 555 yards and two touchdowns on 47 receptions.

Jeff Heuerman returns to lead the tight ends after recording nine receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns last season. Linebackers Von Miller and Brandon Marshall lead a potent defense for the Broncos. Miller recorded 10 sacks and 51 tackles in 2017, while Marshall led the team in total tackles with 75. Safety Darian Stewart led the Broncos' defensive backs with 63 tackles last season and collected a team-high in interceptions (3).

Chris Harris Jr. remains as one of the top veterans in Denver's defense after the cornerback recorded two interceptions and 32 tackles in 2017. Miller, Marshall, Stewart and Harris played in all 16 games for the Broncos in 2017. Brandon McManus continues to carry the kicking duties for the Broncos after leading the team in scoring with 99 points in 2017. Last year, McManus connected 24-of-32 field goal attempts.

The Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos have met six times in the preseason.

The Redskins hold the all-time preseason series advantage with a 5-1 record. The last time the teams faced off in the preseason, Washington defeated Denver, 20-17, in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 9, 2004.
