Redskins Draft WR Josh Doctson With No. 22 Overall Pick

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins selected wide receiver Josh Doctson in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Doctson (6-2, 202) played 36 career games at TCU from 2013-15. During his time with the Horned Frogs, he set school records in receiving yards (2,785) and receiving touchdowns (29) and ranks second in TCU history with 180 career receptions. Including his freshman season at Wyoming in 2011, he completed his collegiate career with 215 receptions, 3,178 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns in 47 games.

Last season, Doctson gained 1,327 receiving yards while setting single-season school records in receptions (79) and receiving touchdowns (14). He earned consensus first-team All-American honors and was named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation's top receiver.

As a junior in 2014, Doctson earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after recording 65 receptions for 1,018 receiving yards with 11 touchdown receptions. A year earlier, he gained 440 yards on 36 receptions as a sophomore.

Doctson began his college career at Wyoming, ranking fifth on the team in 2011 with 35 receptions for 393 yards and five touchdowns. Per NCAA transfer rules, he sat out the 2012 season after transferring to TCU.

Doctson, 23, attended Legacy H.S. in Mansfield, Texas, where he earned first-team All-District honors and was named the team's most valuable player as a senior. He was born Dec. 3, 1992. 

NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF JOSH DOCTSON

  • Doctson is the 450th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 27th first-round selection in that time frame. He is the 58th first-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.
  • Doctson is the 10th player from TCU selected by the Redskins all-time, joining T Wilson Groseclose (1936), Pro Football Hall of Fame QB Sammy Baugh (1937), T I.B. Hale (1939), T Weldon Edwards (1947), T Clarence Marable (1951), T Doug Conaway (1952), G John Groom (1958), RB Marcus Gilbert (1983) and LB Robert Henson (2009).
  • Doctson joins Baugh and Hale as the only TCU products to be selected by the Redskins in the first round.
  • Doctson is the fifth wide receiver selected by the Redskins in the first round in the Common Draft era, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Monk (1980), Desmond Howard (1992), Michael Westbrook (1995) and Rod Gardner (2001).
  • Doctson is the first wide receiver selected by the Redskins in the first round since 2001 when the team selected Rod Gardner with the No. 15 overall pick.
  • Doctson is the second player selected by the Redskins all-time with the No. 22 overall pick, joining B Lonnie Sanders (1963). Doctson is the first selection by the Redskins at No. 22 in the Common Draft era.
  • Doctson is the fourth player selected by the Redskins to have finished his collegiate career in the Big 12 Conference since the conference's inception in 1996. The team's three first-round selections from the Big 12 (LB Brian Orakpo, QB Robert Griffin III and T Trent Williams) have earned eight combined Pro Bowl selections.
