The Washington Redskins embark on their first NFC East title defense since the 2000 season with a Week 1 brawl against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Before the first snap of the action, here is a look at milestones to watch for in the 2013 season, as compiled by Washington Redskins Public Relations.
Redskins Team Milestones:
• The Redskins repeating as NFC East champions for the first time since winning the division in three consecutive seasons from 1982-84.
• The Redskins making the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time since doing it in three straight seasons from 1990-92.
• The Redskins reaching the 10-win mark in consecutive seasons for the first time since finishing with at least 10 wins in three straight seasons from 1989-91.
• The Redskins posting winning records in consecutive seasons for the first time since finishing above .500 in four consecutive seasons from 1989-92.
• The Redskins winning 15 games (regular season and/or postseason) to reach 600 total victories as a franchise. The team enters the 2013 season with an all-time combined record of 585-551-27.
• The Redskins rushing for 5.2-plus yards per carry again to become the second team in NFL history to rush for 5.2 or more yards per carry in consecutive seasons (Minnesota Vikings, 2011 and 2012).
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan:
• Head Coach Mike Shanahan climbing the all-time wins list among NFL head coaches. Shanahan needs nine victories to surpass Hall of Famer Bill Parcells (183) for 10th all-time in career victories. Shanahan has 175 career victories.
• Shanahan winning five games to become the 11th coach in NFL history to reach 180 combined regular season and postseason victories as a head coach.
Redskins Defense:
• Defensive end Stephen Bowen (five), safety Reed Doughty (eight), defensive end Kedric Golston (two) and cornerback Josh Wilson (14) playing in enough games to reach 100 career NFL games played.
• Linebacker London Fletcher (199) starting 10 more consecutive games to break Derrick Brooks' NFL record for consecutive starts by a linebacker (208).
• Fletcher playing the first four games of the season to push his consecutive games played streak to 244, which would break Bill Romanowski's record for the most by a defensive player since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger (243).
• Fletcher earning a trip to his fifth-consecutive Pro Bowl to become the first Redskin to earn Pro Bowl nods in five consecutive seasons since safety Ken Houston accomplished the feat in seven straight years from 1973-79.
• Fletcher retaining his status as the NFL's active leader in career tackles. He enters the 2013 season credited by STATS, LLC with 1,929 total tackles, 859 more than the second-leading active tackler (Chicago's Lance Briggs – 1,070).
• Fletcher (12 interceptions) chasing Chris Hanburger (19), Monte Coleman (17), Chuck Drazenovich (15) and Rich Milot (13) for most career interceptions by a linebacker as a member of the Redskins.
• DeAngelo Hall intercepting one pass to become the 12th player in team history to record 20 interceptions with the organization.
• Hall intercepting one pass to become the fifth active player to reach 40 career interceptions (Ed Reed, Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey and Asante Samuel).
• Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan returning an interception for a touchdown to become the first linebacker in team history to have an interception return for touchdown in three consecutive seasons.
• Linebacker Brian Orakpo recording 10.5 sacks to become the fifth player in Redskins history to post 40 career sacks with the team since the stat became official in 1982 (Dexter Manley, Charles Mann, Monte Coleman, Ken Harvey).
• Orakpo registering a half-sack to become the seventh player in team history to record 30 sacks with the Redskins since the stat became official in 1982.
• Safety Bacarri Rambo becoming the third rookie to start at safety for the Redskins in Week 1 since 2005 (Sean Taylor in 2005, LaRon Landry in 2007).
Redskins Offense:
• Robert Griffin III gaining 3,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards to become the first player in NFL history with multiple seasons of 3,000-plus passing yards and 800-plus rushing yards. Griffin III (2012) and Randall Cunningham (1990) are the only players with one such season.
• Griffin III accumulating 3,000 passing yards to become the fourth player since the 1970 merger to throw for 3,000 yards in each of his first two NFL seasons, joining Peyton Manning (1998-99), Cam Newton (2011-12) and Andy Dalton (2011-12).
• Griffin III throwing for 3,000 passing yards to become the fifth quarterback in Redskins history to post consecutive 3,000-yard seasons, joining Sonny Jurgensen (1966-67), Joe Theismann (1983-84), Mark Rypien (1991-92) and Jason Campbell (2008-09).
• Griffin III passing for 2,064 yards to surpass Norm Snead for the team record for most passing yards by a Redskins quarterback in his first two NFL seasons (5,263 from 1961-62).
• Griffin III throwing 14 touchdown passes to top Snead for the team record for most passing touchdowns by a Redskins quarterback in his first two NFL seasons (33 from 1961-62).
• Griffin III rushing for 1,001 yards to surpass Theismann for most career rushing yards by a quarterback in Redskins history (1,815).
• Griffin III rushing for 800 yards to become only the second quarterback in NFL history with multiple 800-yard rushing seasons (Michael Vick, 2004 and 2006).
• Griffin III rushing for 10 touchdowns to tie Theismann for the most in a career by a quarterback in team history (17).
• Alfred Morris rushing for 1,500 yards to become the first player in team history with multiple 1,500-yard rushing seasons. Morris (1,613 in 2012) and Clinton Portis (1,516 in 2005) are the only players in franchise annals with one 1,500-yard season to their credit.
• Morris rushing for 408 yards to surpass Mike Thomas for the most rushing yards by a Redskin in his first two NFL seasons (2,020 in 1975-76).
• Morris repeating his 13 rushing touchdown performance from a season ago to become only the second player in Redskins history with multiple seasons of at least 13 rushing touchdowns (John Riggins, 1981, 1983-84).
• Santana Moss catching 21 passes to pass Gary Clark (549) for third in team history for career receptions as a Redskin.
• Moss catching 20 passes to become the ninth active player to reach 700 career receptions.
• Moss posting 701 receiving yards to make him the fourth player in Redskins history to post 8,000 receiving yards with the franchise.
• Moss amassing 285 receiving yards to become the seventh active player to reach 10,000 career receiving yards.
• Moss catching six touchdown passes to become the fifth active player to reach 70 career touchdown receptions.
• Moss recording five touchdown receptions to become the sixth player in team history to reach 50 receiving touchdowns as a member of the Redskins.
• Moss scoring 22 points to become the 13th player in history to score 300 points as a member of the Redskins.
• Moss scoring two touchdowns to tie Stephen Davis for 10th-most total touchdowns in team history (48).
• Moss scoring four touchdowns to become the ninth player in history to score 50 total touchdowns as a member of the Redskins.
