BYU was founded in 1875 and began playing collegiate football in 1922. Since 1974, the Cougars have played in 34 bowl games, won 23 conference titles, have 20 Top-25 finishes and captured the 1984 national championship. Over the past 40 seasons, only four FBS programs—Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Florida State—have won more football games than BYU. BYU has played in several NFL stadiums over the years, including AT&T Stadium, Arrowhead Stadium, NRG Stadium, Mercedes-Benz Superdome, MetLife Stadium, Anaheim Stadium and QualComm Stadium.
"This is an unique opportunity for our fans on the East Coast to see our football team play in person," said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. "West Virginia is a very good football program and FedExField is a fantastic NFL venue. It's a great opportunity for our program."
West Virginia, the No. 14 all-time winningest football program in the nation is a proud member of the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers have made bowl appearances in four of the past five years and in 2015 made their 14th since 2000. WVU has been ranked in the Top 25 during 13 of the past 14 years.
"BYU has a national reputation with a long and proud tradition," WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. "We have a lot of respect for their program. Both football programs are known for their blue-collar work ethic, hard-hitting defense and offensive prowess. It's a great matchup."
"Playing at FedExField is an excellent opportunity for our team and our fans. It's a great NFL stadium located in the Washington, D.C. area, where a lot of our WVU alumni live. Fans from Washington, D.C, Baltimore, Northern Virginia and all along the East Coast will have the ability to attend the game," Lyons added.
